Marathon Tales – BBC Radio 3 (2012)

A 90min verse drama written by Hannah Silva and Colin Teevan and produced by David Hunter for BBC Radio 3.

Winner of the 2014 Tinniswood Award for Best Radio Drama Script

The award was given for the radio play Marathon Tales, a drama combining the stories of a number of Marathon runners ancient and modern; the original Pheidippides, Atalanta, Hippomenes, Abebe Bikila, John Tarrant the “Ghost Runner”, Dorando Pietri the “People’s Champion”; pioneer of women’s running Kathy Switzer, and contemporary amateur and professional runners preparing for the London Marathon.

Marathon Tales was a special commission for the 2012 Olympics going out on BBC Radio 3 the night before the closing ceremony.

The judges described Marathon Tales as a ‘speedy and sure-footed play’: ‘High-spiritedly ambitious from the start, joint authors Colin Teevan and Hannah Silva pick up radio drama’s potential and run with it in this ninety minute, fifty-character extravaganza.’

The Tinniswood Award was established by the Society of Authors and the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain to perpetuate the memory of Peter Tinniswood as well as to celebrate and encourage high standards in radio drama.
